The City at Night
I am interested in the emotional and psychological effects of our transient lifestyles in a rapidly shrinking world. Many people find themselves living without much control over what happens in their daily lives as they struggle to survive in a seeming hostile environment. As a way to maintain control over what I do and yet not control the end result, each piece in this body of work begins with painting one square inch at a time. Initially I deliberately leave specific images out of the work yet images begin to emerge from the canvas as I push towards an inevitable conclusion.
Working inside a square format, my work is a philosophical narrative, perhaps even spiritual. The square canvas provides a neutral format that has no direction, that is automatically balanced and symmetrical. The points of colour in my work reference moments of joy, glimpses goodness, and times of intense emotion. They are reminiscent of cities at night, light reflecting off water, ice crystals, and patterning.
